10 Famous Cartier Jewelry Designs

Cartier has designed countless iconic and unbelievable accessories. From royal jewels to exotic gems, the elaborate and intricate designs have always impressed the world. Take a look at 10 of the most famous Cartier jewelry pieces from the 19th century.

1. Maria Félix’s Crocodile Necklace

This elaborate crocodile necklace was commissioned by Maria Félix in 1975. Félix was a movie superstar throughout the 1940s during the heyday of Mexican cinema. She was also a high-fashion devotee—her wardrobe included custom pieces by Givenchy, Balenciaga and Chanel—and a fine jewelry collector. Her vast collection of jewels included custom Cartier pieces and even the 41.37 carat Ashoka diamond once owned by Harry Winston.

In 1975, Félix sauntered into the Cartier store carrying a fishbowl with tiny live crocodiles and requested the jewelers fashion her a necklace modeled after the reptiles. The designers returned her a necklace and brooch hybrid with two crocodiles that wrapped around the neck and clipped together. One half of the crocodile pair was made with 1,023 yellow diamonds, weighing in at 60.02 carats total; the other was made with 1,060 emeralds which tipped the scales at 66.86 carats total.

2. Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Art Deco Necklace

Born in 1887, Marjorie Merriweather Post was a prominent Washington DC socialite and the head of Postum Cereal Co. Merriweather had an incredibly posh lifestyle with homes in Palm Beach and the Adirondacks, the largest privately own sea-going yacht in the world, and an impressive fine jewelry collection which included the tiara Napoleon I gave to his second wife and a pair of diamond earrings once owned by Marie Antoinette. Merriweather was also a loyal patron of Cartier and bonded with Pierre Cartier over their shared love of Russian imperial art.

After her then-husband was appointed the ambassador to the Soviet Union by President Roosevelt in 1936, Merriweather adopted a comparatively subdued image. Eschewing her usual jewels, she asked Cartier to design her a necklace made from two diamond bracelets and a sapphire brooch which joined the two bracelets together. While it sounds over the top (and by most standards would still be considered quite lavish), she would break apart the necklace into the more modest bracelets to rotate into her wardrobe for different occasions.

3. Hutton-Mdivani Jadeite Necklace

This necklace belonged to famed Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton (1912-1979). At the height of her celebrity, she was worth an estimated $1 billion in today’s dollars, but, by the time of her death, Hutton’s coffers had dried up and she was bankrupt. To cover her debts before her death, Hutton sold much of her jewelry collection, but a few items have come up again for auction, including this jadeite necklace.

Hutton had received this exquisite jadeite necklace from her father to celebrate Hutton’s marriage to Prince Mdivani. The necklace was made of 27 graduated jadeite beads which are considered among the finest of the world: highly translucent with a bright emerald green hue. The clasp of rubies and baguette diamonds, mounted in platinum and 18k yellow gold, was designed by Cartier at the request of Hutton’s father.

The jadeite necklace sold at auction for $24.7 million USD to The Cartier Collection in 2014. The Hutton-Mdivani necklace set the world auction records for a jadeite jewel and for a Cartier jewel.

4. Daisy Fellowes’s Tutti Frutti Collier Hindou Necklace

In 1901, Cartier was commissioned by the Queen Alexandra to design an Indian-inspired necklace to match an Indian gown given to her by Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy of India. After this and a trip to India in 1911, Jacques Cartier began incorporating Indian stones into his French Art Deco jewelry and settings. Ultimately Cartier debuted a collection of bracelets and brooches that were made with gemstones cut to resemble leaves, blossoms and berries. This collection would later be dubbed the Tutti Frutti Collection in the 1970s.

The most impressive item in the Tutti Frutti collection belonged to Daisy Fellowes, the heiress to the Singer sewing machine fortune. In 1936, the socialite commissioned the Collier Hindou. The necklace features emeralds, rubies, 13 sapphires and diamonds (totaling 146.9 carats) and two leaf-shaped sapphires weighting 50.8 and 42.45 carats respectively. Today the Collier Hindou is owned by The Cartier Collection and is a part of a traveling museum exhibition.

5. Grace Kelly Engagement Ring

When Prince Rainer III of Monaco proposed to actress Grace Kelly he presented her with a ruby and emerald engagement ring. However Kelly upgraded to a more en vogue diamond engagement ring: a whopping 10.47 carat emerald-cut diamond by Cartier. To give the already stunning ring even more of a wow-factor, Cartier had the impressive center stone flanked by two baguette diamonds.

After their engagement, Kelly never removed the diamond from her finger. She even insisted it be worn by her character Tracy Samantha Lord in High Society. High Society would be Kelly’s last film appearance and includes a memorable moment of Kelly-as-Tracy polishing her stunning diamond ring with the corner of a bed sheet.

6. Duchess of Windsor’s Amethyst Bib Necklace

This intricate necklace was commissioned by Wallis Simpson in 1947. Simpson was the famed American divorcée for whom King Edward VIII abdicated his throne to marry. The couple were well-known jewelry connoisseurs and are credited as possessing the greatest private jewelry collection of all time, including this bib-style amethyst necklace.

Aside from the turquoise, the necklace’s stones were supplied by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor: diamonds, 27 step-cut amethysts and a large heart-shaped amethyst stone. Cartier set the stones in a gold rope-like chain. The Duchess famously wore the necklace with a strapless gown in 1953 at a gala in Versailles, France. Following her death in 1986, the amethyst Cartier necklace sold for $605,000 USD at auction.

7. Sapphire Panthere Brooch

The panther motif has been a regular part of Cartier’s designs since 1914. When it made its debut, the panther was featured as an abstraction of Art Deco styling but, by the 1940s, Cartier had adopted an ornate and three-dimensional approach to incorporating the big cat into its designs. One of the Cartier’s panther-inspired jewelry’s biggest fans was Wallis Simpson, Duchess of Windsor.

One particularly noteworthy piece in her collection is the Cartier Panthere Sapphire Brooch. Made in 1949, the brooch features a perfectly round and rare 152.35 carat cabochon star sapphire. Perched above the sapphire is a Cartier panther, with diamonds for its fur, sapphire for its spots and two pear-cut yellow diamonds for its eyes.

8. The Cartier Royal Pearl

Large pearls in general are an incredible rarity in nature. It is estimated that for every 10,000 oysters harvested, only a single pearl is found. This further stresses how awesomely rare the Cartier Royal Pearl is. The pearl is a perfectly symmetrical drop-shape and weighs an amazing 166.18 grains.

The Royal Pearl first belonged to Queen Mary, the grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. It has since passed through several generations of royalty including Princess Mary and then her son George. Cartier most recently refashioned the pearl into a necklace that can also be worn as a tiara thanks to a clever hidden hinge within the piece. With the Royal Pearl at its center, the tiara-necklace setting also includes natural pearls and diamonds, the largest being a cushion-cut diamond weighing in at 5.01 carats. The Cartier Royal Pearl itself can also be removed from its setting and be worn as a pendant.

9. The Reine Makeda Necklace

A couture choker necklace, the Reine Makeda’s design was crafted around its stunning center stone: a 15 carat oval-shaped ruby from Mozambique. Set in platinum and surrounded by diamonds the dramatic necklace took 3,320 hours of work by Cartier’s premier artisans to create. The Reine Makeda necklace was designed to drape elegantly around the neck and is a testament to the house of Cartier’s exceptional craftsmanship.

10. Cartier’s Patiala Necklace

Made by Cartier in 1928, the Patiala Necklace was commissioned by and named after Bhupindra Singh of Patiala, the Maharaja of Patiala, India. The necklace included an astounding 2,930 diamonds (which range from 18-73 carats), several Burmese rubies, and the world’s seventh largest “De Beers” diamond as its centerpiece. The center stone diamond weighed an incredible 236.65 carats.

The necklace mysteriously disappeared in 1948 but the large diamond resurfaced solo (without the surrounding stones or its original necklace setting) in 1982 at a Sotheby’s auction where it sold for $3.16 million.

Then, in 1998, the necklace was discovered at a second-hand jewelry shop in London. However, the necklace was missing its rubies and diamonds. Even still, the house of Cartier bought what remained of the necklace and, over the span of four years, restored it to resemble the original Patiala Necklace with cubic zirconia, synthetic diamonds and a replica of the original De Beers diamond.

5 Summer Street Style Trends

Summer is here and with the beautiful weather we know you’ll be spending as much time outdoor as possible. We want your summer street style to be on trend this season, so check out these five different ways to wear your jewelry.

1. Silver Statements

Statement necklaces have been trending for a few years now, however, this season there are two variations on this style. This year, we’ve seen the classic statement necklace turn to different and exciting variations of silver. The accessory dresses up a casual style like jeans and T-shirt. Dressing formally? That’s also a perfect time to add a statement to your look. Versatile and universal, the statement necklace is here to stay, but consider a monochrome accent to stay on trend.

2. Bold Chains

The second style of the statement necklace finds itself in the form of a bold chain. We saw the bold chains in Spring/Summer 2015 runway shows from Stella McCartney and Moschino. Not all runway trends make it to the street, but this one has for the summer season. Like the silver statement necklace, the chainlink necklace is versatile in many colors, sizes and lengths. You can wear a bold chain for any occasion to stand out.

3. Classic Watches

It’s in the title — something classic doesn’t go out of fashion, at least not for long. The key to wearing a beautiful watch is in its simplicity. Now, a simple and classic watch, perhaps coupled with a bracelet or two at most, is on trend for a refined and professional look. If you invest in a pre-owned luxury watch, not only is its fashionability eternal, but you can resell it later, perhaps for more than you spent originally.

4. Stacked Bracelets

This is another style to make it off the runway. From bangles to charms to cuffs, there’s not a bracelet style that can resist this trend. Chanel did it with slogans in the Spring/Summer 2015 show. Dior did too with simple silver hoops. And we can’t forget the monochrome look from Bottega Veneta. The easy-yet-ornate nature of this look has allowed the stacked look to dominate street style this season.

5. Statement Earrings

If statement necklaces aren’t for you, you can still make an impression with oversized statement earrings. This year, crystal baubles and ornate costume earrings have dominated the street scene and everyday fashion. We can’t help but think of vintage and glam Chanel earrings. You can dress up a casual look or add interest to professional garb with statement earrings.

Style Icon Inspiration for Father’s Day

It’s crunch time. Father’s Day is approaching and if you haven’t figured out the perfect gift for Dad, then you may need some assistance. If your father is a dapper man — or even if he just wishes to be — we have the best men’s accessories no matter if your dad is classic, modern or vintage. Check out our three very different, favorite style icons that also happen to be dads.

1. The Classic

Okay, we are going to get it out of the way because it’s inevitable — James Bond. Every man looks at James Bond, no matter who the actor, and thinks he’s the most stylish man that’s ever existed. Well-fitted pinstripe suits and classic accessories are really all it takes to get this look.

Since 1995 saw the release of “Goldeneye” an Omega Seamaster has donned the wrist of James Bond, as played by Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. Over the span of 20 years and seven Bond films, the watch has remained the same. You can find one here.

If you let your eye stray from Bond’s classic timepiece, you’ll see another ever-present accessory — the cufflinks. Cufflinks are essential to a polished, professional and refined look. You can find them here.

2. The Modern

David Beckham may have gained his fame from kicking a ball, but now he’s kicking back. Well, sometimes. When not attending events and sporting a fitted suit and formal wristwatch, Beckham still likes to accessorize.

Layers of bracelets are typically found on his wrist. Sometimes he wears several beaded bands, and other times he wears a single leather strand. Men’s jewelry is on trend this season, so gift Dad a few more accessory options. You can find them here.

A Rolex has a more classic appeal, however, and Beckham doesn’t stray away from luxury timepieces either. He’s been spotted wearing a Rolex Sea-Dwellers, and he was the face of the Breitling for Bentley ad campaign. You can find it here.

3. The Vintage

The King of Cool is possibly one of the only men who could go from race car to suit and tie so effortlessly. The vintage look carries the same vibe, and if your father is a Steve McQueen fan, then he will likely appreciate an inspired gift.

In the film Le Mans, McQueen portrays a driver in a 24-hour race. McQueen famously wears a Heuer Monaco Chronograph in the film. After Tag was acquired, Tag Heuer produced a replica Monaco due to the popularity of the watch. Get the watch here.

There aren’t many suits that are admired as much as the three-piece McQueen wears in “The Thomas Crown Affair.” The grey-checked suit would be difficult to pull off by anyone other than McQueen. And no look is complete without a vintage tie pin, which you can find here.

JCK Las Vegas + Couture Wrap-Up: Trends and Highlights from the Showroom Floor

TrueFacet co-founders Chris and Tirath at the Couture show.

The JCK Las Vegas jewelry exhibition is an annual event, featuring over 2,500 exhibitors, where top designers in the business showcase their newest designs, influencing the trends for the upcoming year. The TrueFacet team journeyed out West to bring you the latest trends and highlights from the jewelry world.

Though there were thousands of exhibits to choose from — Chimento, Alex and Ani, Charriol, Effy, Chopard to name a few — they all had something in common: jewelry is trending towards something new. It may seem vague, but the traditional is out and designers are using bold colors, fresh motifs, different metals and fashion-forward designs.

Our team walked the showroom floor for days to see what’s on trend for the upcoming season. Here is a list of our favorites from the exhibition, plus a few of our favorite highlights from the show.

1. Vibrant Colors

The showroom was alight with every hue of the color spectrum. Designers didn’t hold back when it came to bold color choices that are perfect for the summertime. Ippolita and Kabana were among the many designers featuring dynamic shades. We especially loved Kabana’s vibrant floral motifs pictured above. There were also creative designs, like this bright statement necklace made of recycled Nespresso cups by Kathleen Nowak Tucci.

2. Men’s Jewelry

We’ve said it before: men’s jewelry is trending. And this was especially apparent at the JCK show. Masculine bracelets dominated the men’s accessory category. Our favorite designs at Couture were classic and colorful cufflinks by Deakin & Francis and Heston Designs collection of bold men’s bracelets.

3. Working with Metal

This year, many designers considered different ways to implement precious metals in their designs — and the creativity yielded results that were breathtaking. Simon G and Berco Jewelry were among the many designers who added a rose gold touch to their intricate bridal and diamond ring designs. Lashbrook designed a unique chevron-like wedding band of Damascus steel and yellow gold set with black diamonds. Stuller made wood elegant in their design that featured platinum and wood set with diamonds. All of these items won JCK Jeweler’s choice awards at the exhibition.

4. Inspired by Nature

Nature-inspired designs were everywhere. From butterflies to vines, to petal and shells, the prevalent motif was impossible to miss. Many of the designs featured bold colors as well, making these designs perfect for the summer.

TrueFacet Honorable Mentions:

1. Stretch Bracelets

We saw this 25-year-old Chimento design in many places, but Chimento made it LUX. The stretch to the bracelet makes this design unique, interesting and other’s at the show had made a lower cost option in sterling silver as well.

2. Ariel Adams’s Omega Speedmaster

We met Ariel from aBlogtoWatch and couldn’t help but admire the unique Omega Speedmaster he was sporting. The timepiece featured a large red case — something we haven’t seen before.

3. The Couture Show

The Couture show showcased the luxury brands at Las Vegas jewelry week. The exhibits displayed an amazing use of diamonds blended with 18K rose, yellow and white gold. Chopard reinforced the value of their name with new designs for the iconic Happy Diamonds collection. Judith Ripka was impressive with her use of bright and bold colors with diamond designs.

The show also honored up-and-coming designers, along with established names, at the Design Awards. Hearts on Fire took home the award for Best Design in Haute Couture with a stunning diamond flame-inspired necklace. One of our favorite upcoming designer was Jorg Heinz who took home the Editor’s Choice award for his diamond-encrusted rings.

4. Most Expensive Guitar

This stunning guitar made its first public appearance at BaselWorld 2015 and its next stop was JCK Las Vegas. The Gibson SG featured over 400 carats of Coronet diamonds and 3.5 pounds of 18K gold. Valued at $2 million, this guitar earns the title of World’s Most Expensive Guitar.

1. Chopard

Blanchett’s shrimp-motif earrings grabbed attention at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The bold, gem-encrusted earrings featured rare pink diamonds. In the same year, at the 2014 Academy Awards, Blanchett’s look was all classic Hollywood glamour. She wouldn’t have been able to complete the look without her massive a beautiful Chopard earrings. The floral earrings featured opals and diamonds set in white gold.

2. Van Cleef & Arpels

At the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Cate stunned again with a pair golden Etruscan-inspired Van Cleef & Arpels cuffs. Previously, Cate paired a Balenciaga dress with a pair of VCA Socrate earrings. The design featured small flower-shaped clusters set with diamonds.

The IWC designs aren’t known for their femininity, but Cate effortlessly paired the watch with a floor-length floral skirt and stacked with bracelets.
