Winter Jewelry Trends

Though the season has been mild, there is still a few months left of the winter season. We love the jewelry trends we’ve seen on the streets and on the runways and now is the time to try them out. Check out our five favorite trends and find out how to get the look. Click on the jewelry image to view the item from TrueFacet.

1. Drop Earrings

This winter, your earrings have to bring on the attention — it’s all about the statement. Our personal favorite statement form is the drop earring style. These need to be oversized, over-the-top or have an interesting and unique detail. We saw this look from Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren and Marni in their Fall/Winter 2016 ready to wear shows.

2. Crystal Jewelry

Crystal is an especially dynamic and versatile material for use in jewelry. Whether the stone is in its raw or polished form, the look is always a unique statement. The stone can be a the focus of the piece or used for a glittering accent. Either way the stone is used, it’s trending for the winter season. Our favorite from the runway was in raw, statement form at the Lanvin Fall/Winter 2015 ready to wear show.

3. Fringe Jewelry

This look is inspired by the ’70s trend that’s swept the fashion world in 2015. Fringe jewelry is the perfect accessory for your retro outfit. Our favorite look:tassel necklaces. We were inspired by the tassel earrings on the Lanvin Fall/Winter runway.

4. Buckles and Cuffs

Last year was all about stacks and layering jewelry. This year, it’s about the large, statement pieces — and this is the case for the bracelet. This season, stay on trend with an oversized cuff. We also liked the buckle motif on these large pieces. Our favorite from the runway: the large, detailed cuffs from Chanel, of course.

5. Geometric Designs

Structured, clean lines in new and interesting patterns took the runway this season. We saw the sleek and modern jewelry paired with both loose and flowing looks as well as clean cut contemporary apparel. Angular earrings or surprising rings are a simple way to elevate your look. We especially loved the geometric drop earrings from Anteprima.

5 Expensive Jewelry Gifts

In the spirit of gift-giving season we took a look at some of the most expensive jewelry gifts ever given. From anonymous splurges to priceless royal gifts, there’s no shortage of pricey gemstones throughout history. Check out our five favorite lavish gifts.

5. Star of the East — $11.9 million

The Star of the East made its way to England as a wedding gift. Initially the stone belonged to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II. After the Sultan was deposed in 1909, the diamond was sold by Cartier in Paris. Evalyn Walsh, the daughter of miner and gold prospector, was on her honeymoon. After three months traveling through Europe and the Middle East, Walsh and her husband found themselves at Cartier Paris. She immediately fell in love with the 94.8-carat diamond, but had spent all of her money on their vacation. Walsh’s father later settled the payment as an additional wedding gift.

4. Emerald and Diamond Tiara — $12.7 million

This diamond and emerald tiara from 1900 belonged to Princess Katharina Henckel von Donnersmarck, member of a noble German family. The tiara features 11 Colombian emeralds weighing over 500 carats which were originally owned by a Maharaja of India. The tiara was a wedding gift to Princess Katharina from her husband-to-be Guido Count von Henckel.

3. Chopard Watch — $25 million

Though this watch was bought anonymously, it is known that the piece was meant as a gift for one lucky woman. The Chopard creation is not only one of the most expensive gifts, but it’s also one of the most expensive watches ever made. Doubling as a jewelry piece, the watch features a 15-carat heart-shaped pink diamond, a 12-carat heart-shaped blue diamond, an 11-carat heart-shaped white diamond and an additional 163 smaller white and yellow diamonds.

d it’s made of a 15-carat pink diamond, a 12-carat blue diamond and an 11-carat white diamond. They also used some white gold and some yellow gold, and, of course, 163 carats of smaller diamonds, coming to a total of 201 carats

2. The Cullinan Diamond — $400 million

The Cullinan diamond is now 9 different stones that are used in different items of the British royal collection. However, the original diamond, so massive it could be broken down into 9 different pieces, was sent to England whole. The trip over was a security risk and a ship was sent with English security aboard while a package was in a safe in the captain’s quarters. However, this was merely a diversion and the actual diamond was simply sent in the mail. The uncut diamond, a total of 3,106 carats, was gifted by the South African government — an English colony at the time — to King Edward VII for his 66th birthday.

1. The Koh-i-Noor — Priceless

It’s believed that the Koh-i-Noor was first mined in the 1300s at a mine in Golconda, India. It weighed 793 carats before cutting and 105.6 after being cut twice. The legendary stone is believed by some to be a gift from Surya, the Hindu sun god and that the stone has magical powers. The first mention of the diamond came in 1304 after being recorded as a spoil of the battle of Malawah. Then, in 1526, the diamond was mentioned again when the Mongols were in possession of the stone. This is when the Emperor’s jeweler cut the stone poorly and reduced it’s size from nearly 800 carats to 186 carats.

Through many more battles and wars, the stone changed hands several times. The King of Afghanistan, Ahmed Shah maintained possession. He was deposed of his thrown and went to the maharaja of India asking for help in returning to power. As part of the deal, the maharaja asked for the Koh-i-Noor as payment. After the death of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839, the Sikh empire lacked leadership, allowing the British empire to enter and colonize the region by 1849. The colonial governor had the new, 13-year-old maharaja Duleep Singh gift the Koh-i-Noor to the British Queen Victoria in 1850.

The diamond has never changed hands through a sale and has no estimated value — it’s believed to be a priceless artifact of history. The diamond is one of the most imporant and valued stones of the British Crown Jewels. The value of the entire collection is estimated around $673.88 billion.

Check out some of the most lavish rings and collections belonging to your favorite celebrities.

7 Insanely Expensive Celebrity Watches

One wouldn’t expect the same people who regularly walk on televised red carpets to be interested in the traditional world of horology. And yet, because they have the money to spend, the time to spend it and the eccentric tastes to make things interesting, celebrities have some of the best watch collections.

Whether they’re shelling out cash for their own personal watch designs or they’re spending for a timepiece for a loved one, your favorite actors and artists are making waves in the watch industry for their expensive tastes. Here, we’ve rounded up 7 of their most expensive horological ventures.

1. Kanye West

The only thing surprising about Kanye West’s presence on this list is the fact that his watch is the least expensive of the seven. Granted, $180K is no small sum, and the watch does earn its price tag with its gold mother-of-pearl dial decorated with white, yellow, black and brown diamonds illustrating West’s likeness and more white diamonds set into the watch’s bezel, pushing the total weight of the stones to 8 carats. This Tiret timekeeper has two Swiss quartz chronograph movements and two date complications. Clients interested in the limited edition model could customize the piece and keep its 18k gold bracelet or replace it with a reptile leather strap.

Left: Usher’s $250K watch. Right: Kanye’s $180K watch.

2. Usher

When it came to flashy custom timepieces from Tiret, Kanye’s watch couldn’t hold a candle to Usher’s model, which came out a month before the rapper’s model did and rang in at $250K. Usher’s Tiret design features 10 carats worth of white and yellow diamonds as well as 1,106 precious stones of varying types. Like the Kanye West watch, this timepiece has two Swiss quartz chronograph movements and two date complications. To glam it up even further, the custom-designed box that accompanies each Usher watch also doubles as a humidor for 78 cigars.

5. Angelina Jolie

This Patek Philippe Minute Repeater was an engagement gift from Brad Pitt, who is famous for his love of Patek Philippe timepieces. This particular model from the luxury brand is a remarkable piece: the 33 mm officer’s-style case houses the watch’s ultra-thin movement and each of the tiny steel mallets that produce the watch’s chiming sound. This $390K self-winding minute repeater is the first-ever model made for women and features a gold and mother-of-pearl dial. Pitt decided to give the piece to Jolie as a pre-wedding gift, and he was lucky enough to skip the two-year-long waiting list and received it within two months.

4. Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan never designed his own watch, but there is one model dedicated to him. The RM057 Tourbillon Dragon by Richard Mille is a limited edition model whose design was inspired by Jackie Chan’s altruism.

Released in 2012, the RM057 is available in 18K white gold or red gold. Only 36 copies were made of this stunning piece, which features a clear dial that gives way to a gold engraved dragon that winds itself between the watch’s bridges inside the barrel-shaped case. In addition to its gorgeous aesthetics, the Jackie Chan watch is also water-resistant up to 50 meters. The musician Seal managed to pick up one of the 36 watches, which rang in at approximately $475K.

3. Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen has certainly had his ups and downs, but he has consistently been an avid watch collector, especially of Patek Philippe watches. After losing his Ref. 5970, Sheen decided to add an incredibly rare and expensive model to his collection. He replaced the lost model with a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 2438/1. This incredibly rare model includes a day/date complication, a moon phase dial and outer Arabic five-minute divisions. The watch is estimated to be worth around $700K.

2. Eric Clapton

Rock star Eric Clapton may dominate the stage, but he also, clearly, dominates the auction room. His extensive watch collection is nothing to scoff at, especially since one of the rarest watches in the world was once part of it. The Patek Philippe 2499 is one of just two of that model in the world that bears a platinum case. In 1987, Philippe Stern took two movements out of a batch of about 10 pieces and had them set in special platinum cases. One stayed within the firm as a museum display. The other jumped around between private collectors at auction and finally landed in the hands of Eric Clapton, who finally sold it at auction with Christie’s Geneva for a stunning $3.6 million. The timepiece has a three subsidiary dials for constant seconds, a day/date complication, a moon phase dial and outer Arabic five-minute divisions.

1. Jay-Z

Beyoncé liked it, but she didn’t put a ring on it. Instead, for her husband Jay-Z’s 43rd birthday, she gifted him a one-of-a-kind, diamond-encrusted Hublot Big Bang watch. This limited-edition piece features 1,282 diamonds set into 18k white gold with faceted diamond-polished, rhodium-plated hands. The dazzling timepiece costs no less than $5 million.

True Tips: How to Dress for the Occasion

It’s party and event season, so you might be reeling from all the RSVPs and invites. The first thing that always crosses our minds: what will I wear? Whether your gathering with friends, family or coworkers, deciding what’s appropriate for the occasion is a daunting task. To help ease the holiday stress, we put together a list of four common holiday events with accessory tips. Click on the image to view the item.

1. Office Holiday Party

If you are attending an office holiday party, sometimes it can be difficult to find a middle ground between business professional and formalwear. We suggest small and simple pieces for understated accessories. Adding a dress watch and pearl earrings can take your office attire closer to formal than business. If you are unsure of the dress code for your work event, adding a diamond pendant and interesting ring can elevate your look without overstepping.

2. Family Gathering

At first, a party with your family doesn’t seem worth of wardrobe questioning. However, then you realize that you’ll want to look your best for all of your relatives or even your in-laws. You’ll want to wear something beautiful and in the holiday spirit without going overboard. We suggest a holiday-colored statement necklace with simple accessories, like a dress watch and perhaps a holiday charm bracelet.

3. A Party with Friends

If you’ve never challenged your sartorial prowess at an ugly Christmas sweater party, then now is your chance. If you are dressing for an evening in with your friends, then you have the opportunity to have fun with your accessories while also remaining casual. We suggest a stack of David Yurman bracelets to compliment the noisy sweater and a quirky, holiday Chanel brooch to take it over the top. Finally, calm down the look with a small pair of stud earrings.

4. A Formal New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve is one of the few times a year wear dressing extravagantly is not only acceptable, but encouraged. If you are attending a formal party, then you will definitely need to have at least one over-the-top statement piece. A diamond-encrusted necklace, bracelet or ring would be perfect. Even better — a Panthere piece from Cartier or a Serpenti piece from Bulgari.

How to Avoid a Counterfeit Christmas

Every year, jewelry and watches top our holiday wish list, and it seems we aren’t the only ones. In the U.S. Last year, Americans bought $78.08 billion in fine jewelry and watches. Nearly 30 percent of those purchases, or $21.75 billion, occurred during the November and December holiday season.

With consumers moving to online shopping outlets for their holiday purchases, buyers should be wary of certain websites when purchasing luxury goods. Counterfeiting is an estimated $650 billion industry. In the United States, the Dept. of Homeland Security seized $1.7 billion worth of counterfeit goods, and that’s only a small percentage of all counterfeits. It’s difficult to catch counterfeit goods at U.S. ports because many of the items come in small, personal packages.

The counterfeiting industry includes movies, games, logos and tags, computers and other electronics, footwear and handbags. Fine jewelry and watches are the second most-produced counterfeit category, just behind handbags. With $502.8 million seized in 2013, jewelry and watches accounted for 29 percent of all counterfeit goods stopped at the border. Again, this doesn’t include products made in the U.S. and products that made it through homeland security.

It’s important to buy authentic items even though they may be priced higher. The counterfeit industry is estimated to cost the global economy over $1.7 trillion dollars. This amount includes not only the value of the counterfeit goods($650 billion), but jobs and taxes lost because of the illegal industry. Counterfeiting also exploits children for labor in sweatshops overseas, and supports human-trafficking, organized crime and other illegal industries.

The left bracelet is counterfeit and the right bracelet is authentic.

Shopping Tips For Buying Online

When shopping online, first think about how you found the website you are looking at. If you found the site from a search engine, think about what search terms you used. It’s a common practice for counterfeit sites to pay for certain terms to show up in the advertisement results. If you search your item plus ‘discount’ or ‘cheap’ then it’s common for the results to contain counterfeit websites.

If you typed the website URL yourself, then double check that everything is spelled correctly. Some counterfeit sites will have a URL very similar to a legitimate site, praying on those who make a typo. Some retailers have a list of websites that are known counterfeiters, so search for that list and avoid those sites if you are looking to buy pre-owned and vintage.

Some counterfeiters invest a lot of time in making their website look professional and legitimate. Check through the website and look for things that may have been overlooked, such as an FAQ page or privacy policy. Make sure there is a clear return policy and contact information, including the HQ location.

Finally, be sure to research everything involving the purchase. Reasearch the website for reviews and ratings, and be sure to check as many different review websites as possible. Also look into the typical price of the item you are planning to purchase. If the price of the item you want is significantly lower than the all of the competition, then the item is likely counterfeit.
