7 Insanely Expensive Celebrity Watches
One wouldn’t expect the same people who regularly walk on televised red carpets to be interested in the traditional world of horology. And yet, because they have the money to spend, the time to spend it and the eccentric tastes to make things interesting, celebrities have some of the best watch collections.
Whether they’re shelling out cash for their own personal watch designs or they’re spending for a timepiece for a loved one, your favorite actors and artists are making waves in the watch industry for their expensive tastes. Here, we’ve rounded up 7 of their most expensive horological ventures.
1. Kanye West
The only thing surprising about Kanye West’s presence on this list is the fact that his watch is the least expensive of the seven. Granted, $180K is no small sum, and the watch does earn its price tag with its gold mother-of-pearl dial decorated with white, yellow, black and brown diamonds illustrating West’s likeness and more white diamonds set into the watch’s bezel, pushing the total weight of the stones to 8 carats. This Tiret timekeeper has two Swiss quartz chronograph movements and two date complications. Clients interested in the limited edition model could customize the piece and keep its 18k gold bracelet or replace it with a reptile leather strap.
2. Usher
When it came to flashy custom timepieces from Tiret, Kanye’s watch couldn’t hold a candle to Usher’s model, which came out a month before the rapper’s model did and rang in at $250K. Usher’s Tiret design features 10 carats worth of white and yellow diamonds as well as 1,106 precious stones of varying types. Like the Kanye West watch, this timepiece has two Swiss quartz chronograph movements and two date complications. To glam it up even further, the custom-designed box that accompanies each Usher watch also doubles as a humidor for 78 cigars.
5. Angelina Jolie
This Patek Philippe Minute Repeater was an engagement gift from Brad Pitt, who is famous for his love of Patek Philippe timepieces. This particular model from the luxury brand is a remarkable piece: the 33 mm officer’s-style case houses the watch’s ultra-thin movement and each of the tiny steel mallets that produce the watch’s chiming sound. This $390K self-winding minute repeater is the first-ever model made for women and features a gold and mother-of-pearl dial. Pitt decided to give the piece to Jolie as a pre-wedding gift, and he was lucky enough to skip the two-year-long waiting list and received it within two months.
Jackie Chan never designed his own watch, but there is one model dedicated to him. The RM057 Tourbillon Dragon by Richard Mille is a limited edition model whose design was inspired by Jackie Chan’s altruism.
Released in 2012, the RM057 is available in 18K white gold or red gold. Only 36 copies were made of this stunning piece, which features a clear dial that gives way to a gold engraved dragon that winds itself between the watch’s bridges inside the barrel-shaped case. In addition to its gorgeous aesthetics, the Jackie Chan watch is also water-resistant up to 50 meters. The musician Seal managed to pick up one of the 36 watches, which rang in at approximately $475K.
3. Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen has certainly had his ups and downs, but he has consistently been an avid watch collector, especially of Patek Philippe watches. After losing his Ref. 5970, Sheen decided to add an incredibly rare and expensive model to his collection. He replaced the lost model with a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Ref. 2438/1. This incredibly rare model includes a day/date complication, a moon phase dial and outer Arabic five-minute divisions. The watch is estimated to be worth around $700K.
2. Eric Clapton
Rock star Eric Clapton may dominate the stage, but he also, clearly, dominates the auction room. His extensive watch collection is nothing to scoff at, especially since one of the rarest watches in the world was once part of it. The Patek Philippe 2499 is one of just two of that model in the world that bears a platinum case. In 1987, Philippe Stern took two movements out of a batch of about 10 pieces and had them set in special platinum cases. One stayed within the firm as a museum display. The other jumped around between private collectors at auction and finally landed in the hands of Eric Clapton, who finally sold it at auction with Christie’s Geneva for a stunning $3.6 million. The timepiece has a three subsidiary dials for constant seconds, a day/date complication, a moon phase dial and outer Arabic five-minute divisions.
1. Jay-Z
Beyoncé liked it, but she didn’t put a ring on it. Instead, for her husband Jay-Z’s 43rd birthday, she gifted him a one-of-a-kind, diamond-encrusted Hublot Big Bang watch. This limited-edition piece features 1,282 diamonds set into 18k white gold with faceted diamond-polished, rhodium-plated hands. The dazzling timepiece costs no less than $5 million.
